The ORION Citizen Science project Genigma and the ORION evaluation of citizen science initiatives will be presented at the Citizen Science SDG online conference on 15 October. The conference is an official event of Germany’s 2020 EU Council presidency and the theme is: Knowledge for Change: A decade of Citizen Science (2020-2030) in support of the SDGs.
The conference will present, evaluate and discuss the exciting contributions that citizen science makes in framing and achieving sustainable development, specifically the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It will addresses topics around citizen science such as:
- Citizen science for the UN Sustainable Development Goals, e.g. good health and well-being, quality education, life on land and below water
- Policy and scientific methodology of citizen science to implement the SDGs
- Scientific benefit of citizen science networks and platforms and their impact on society
The presentation "Genigma: a citizen science game to explore cancer cells DNA" by Elisabetta Broglio, CRG, will take place in the session on "Citizen Science for health and well being" at 10:20-11:20 on 15 October.
Genigma is a smartphone game to identify, in a collective way, which fragments of cancer genomes may play a significant role in the disease. Each player will analyze various small fragments of cancer cell DNA, that correspond to real data obtained in the lab from cancer cell lines. Players will receive scientific updates and they will collect pills of knowledge (cards) on genomics, cancer and open science.
The ORION evaluation of citizen science initiatives from a qualitative perspective is presented at the E-poster session on 14 and 15 of October by Digna Cuoso and Caterina Solé of Crecim.
