The Czech partner JCMM held a workshop on Open Science for university students on 29th November 2018. The aim of the workshop was to acquaint interested students with the ORION project, the principles for Open Science and the new call for Open Science projects which was recently launched by JCMM. The event was hosted by the Brno Urban Centre and attended by potential applicants from almost all eligible Brno universities.

The workshop was open by Mr. Miloš Šifalda, director of JCMM, followed by a presentation from Michael Doležal, JCMM project manager for ORION Open Science. JCMM has launched an open call for project proposals to master and doctorate students from universities in Brno. Ten projects will receive grants in the amount of €5000 for innovative projects with Open Science attributes within the framework of "local societal challenges“. The registration is open until 15 January 2019.

At the event students were explained the evaluation criteria, requirement procedures and how to apply for the grants. The floor was then given to the guest speaker, Mr Jiří Marek, manager of Smart City Brno projects and a specialist on open access. Mr Marek is one of the leading experts on Open Science in the Czech well as active member of the Smart City Brno Committee which has initiated a number of citizen led activities. He gave overview of the Open Science principles and the importance for Horizon 2020 projects.
